Basic Trainee, meet 23 years of service Officer

I found an old snapshot of me at Basic Training in 1985 - they took one and sent it attached to a form letter to your home, to prove you had not run off and joined the circus or somesuch. No, it was worse...you had joined the Infantry!

This was me last Fall, at a FARP outside of the Baghdad metro area. Why the heck was I smiling?!

My goodness, they let 15 year olds join the infantry!?! You look sooooo young! (In the first picture, silly!)

Yeah, why are you smiling, practically laughing, in the second picture? Found out Baskins Robbins had just got in coffee-flavored ice cream maybe? :)

Well, it takes much less muscle to smile than it does to frown. So being in the military for all these years, you have learned to keep facial muscles in reserve for when the Quartermaster runs out of them.
