On a lighter note...
Best wishes to Major John, Inner Prop, and their families, of course.... If anyone can bring order to the area ravaged by the hurricane, it'll be Major John. He's a force against entropy everywhere he goes!
Anyway, I'm sure John would want us to "soldier on", as it were, so take a look at what I was doing for the better part of this holiday weekend: Manning the SimplyFun booth at the 3rd annual Chicago International Toy and Game Fair (CHITAG) at Navy Pier. CHITAG is a fun little fair that is just beginning to hit its stride. The organizers say they are trying to make it into an American Essen. We have a ways to go for that, but it's a nice opportunity to go see some new products from a variety of small-to-medium publishers and independent game designers, without having to travel all the way to Germany.
I'm a consultant for SimplyFun, which is a relatively new company that runs home parties (sort of like Pampered Chef or Creative Memories), but with family board games. CHITAG was a great opportunity for us to get our name out there and get some good leads from prospective customers, even if sales at the fair itself weren't particularly high (which was true for just about all of the vendors, I believe).

screw the games! what about the toys!? (yeah, i have a few action figures)
It was mostly games, a few toys. I don't think I saw any action figures.
Do you have any Attacktix figures? Combine Star Wars action figures with an actual game! Very cool, if you can get past some of the figures' gigantic arms, guns, and hands. :)
Tempus, can you recommend your all time favorite beer and pretzel games that can be played in under an hour? I have a weekly gaming crew that meets at 6:30, but the full group is never assembled until 7:30-8:00. The 'cocktail hour' is a great time for pick-up games. Any suggestions?
All time favorite beer-n-pretzels game, hmmm -- If you can go the full hour or maybe even a few minutes more, I always recommend Settlers of Catan. Light and fun, can be played in an hour if everyone knows the game well and plays snappily. Probably just a notch above what I would consider "beer-n-pretzels", however.
If you need it faster and lighter than that, try Category 5 (originally released as 6 Nimmt). It's a very light card game that can comfortably accomodate 2-10 players, so you have a lot of flexibility there, very fast since all players play simultaneously, and just enough thinking to make it interesting.
Another possible choice might be Carcassonne. I notice this has started appearing in Toys R Us. I like this game a lot and you can play it pretty quickly.
nope, and my figures are pretty limited to girls.
