Yes, Canada does understand. Well, at least some of us do. Afghanistan actually meets the criteria for military actions we want to be involved in very well and our soldiers are doing excellent work over there at great risk to themselves.
Still, a lot of us seem to be against our involvement in Afghanistan for reasons that seem to be based on a misunderstanding of what the mission is. For instance a lot of Canadians think it's "George Bush's war" despite the UN authorization. They see it as a war of aggression despite the fact that it was undertaken in response to 9/11 in accordance with our NATO treaty obligations.
We're supposed to be nation that believes in rebuilding societies after war, not bombing them into the stone age and walking away. It is encouraging to see how many Canadians do understand that.
Issachar,
The Canadian Army soldiers I have served with have been wonderful. Good troops, very professional and cheerful - even in bad spots. I just wish they had the support that we in the US Armed Forces have been receiving.
BTW - good to see you here. For those who do not know, Issachar is an Original "Friend of the Donuts" because he linked to us when we were very new and very un-noticed. ANd he had some nice things to say about some of my Afghan photography, heh heh.
I've been reading around. I just didn't have anything worth saying. :)
With all the talk about the war I don't want to say "me too" all that often.
(And I still like your Afghan photography).
