Thousands of years. 5,000 or so is their own reckoning.
They were fairly sophisticated for being nomadic and all. I dealt with them on many occasions. The only comparison I can come up with is the Gypsies that still live in Europe. More or less outside the mainstream, but they have to be very adroit and sharp to survive. They know of the rest of the world - but are still happy enough with their lives to remain as they have been. Will it continue and for how long? These I cannot answer.
