Gratuitous Afghanistan Photo of the Weekend (51)

This is "Rambo". He is a local from the north-east of Kabul - found at the front gate of Camp Phoenix. Camp Phoenix is one of the prime locations for training the Afghan National Army. At Camp Phoenix, soldiers like the Signaleer are turning tough Afghan fighters into tough, professional, Afghan soldiers. Rambo is not a big fan of the Taliban, and he has a very good memory of who was a Talib. He decided to help with security at the front gate of Camp Phoenix, and was given the nom-de-guerre of Rambo by the US troops there. Eventually, a way to get him a modest stipend was found too. Even though I was stationed 35-40 miles away, I heard the story of this man.
While I was at Bagram, some Talib tried a driveby shooting at some French troops outside Camp Phoenix. The French fired back and hit the shooter. Rambo, who was seriously offended by this, had grabbed a cudgel. I had heard that the term coup de grace might have been used...

  3. He's also contributing to a capitalist future in Afghanistan. With the stipend he gets, he's hired 3 other Afghans to watch the gate when he is not able.

And he'll always return a salute.
