A Bang in the Salang

Here is a brief clip from the Salang Valley - not far from the Salang Tunnel. The Afghans had trundled a T-55 up to use in "pre-empting" any avalanches...the result of it's first shot is on this clip. CAUTION: Naughty words used! In fact, this was the first time I had ever heard this particular soldier cuss. After 10 months together. In an active, combat theater. And it took this to get him to swear - heh heh.

How big is a T-55?

The reverberation in that canyon was fantastic. There's just something irresistible about enormous, resounding blammos. (Or maybe not so much, if you're in combat!.)

And that was a pretty mild naughty word.

Good stuff, these little videos.

Wow. Why does this remind me of the redneck olympics where every act of derring do is preceded by the fatalistic words...

Watch this!

PS - Did they drive the T55 or puch it? ;-)

T-55 main gun is a 100mm one.

Funny you should ask, CD. If I can get the pictures dug up, I will post them. You see, they hauled the sucker up the valley on a flatbed, then it managed to wheeze and clank into place by itself - about 50 Afghans decided to ride on top of it...

You gotta love these indomitable people.

In your snapshots of their goings-on, there's the undercurrent of their appalling national history and present circumstance, an overlay of Keystone Kops, and in the middle, determination.

Priceless.
